Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium|"Tornado of Sardines" Summer Version|Swimming in a group of about 35,000 fish

On Thursday, July 1, 2021, the Port of Nagoya Suijokan started the summer version of the "My Sardine Tornado" event, in which approximately 35,000 Japanese sardines swim in groups with underwater lighting.

The theme of the summer version is "rainbow after rain". It conveys nostalgia, a warm and gentle melody, a gentle enveloping impression, and a message that there is no rain that does not stop in the corona disaster.

The Sardine Tornado started in 2007. The reason for this was that when a large group of sardines were put in a tank and fed, the zookeepers noticed that the sardines were excited and swam like a tornado at a breakneck speed. At any given time, about 35,000 Japanese sardines are bred at the museum. In order to maintain the number, we catch sardines off the coast of Kanagawa and Shizuoka once or twice a year and put them in tanks.

The event is held on a daily basis (see the official website). The tour takes about 5 minutes. The location is the Kuroshio Large Aquarium on the 2nd floor of the South Building of the Mizutsukan.
