The number of tourists in Nara City in FY2020 decreased by 58.4% from the previous year to 7.242 million. The breakdown is 867,000 overnight guests (down 50.1% from the previous year), 289,000 foreign tourists (down 91.3% from the previous year), and 174,000 students on school trips, down 78.9% from the previous year.

Of the 6,779,000 general tourists (-48.9% year-on-year), 5.995 million were day-trippers (-50.3% year-on-year) and 784,000 overnight visitors (down 34.7% year-on-year). Of the 174,000 students on school trips (-78.9% year-on-year), 135,000 were day-trippers (-81.5% year-on-year) and 90,000 overnight visitors (-58.5% year-on-year).

The number of foreign tourists was 289,000 (-91.3% compared with the previous year), of which 245,000 were day trippers (-91.5% compared with the previous year) and 44,000 people staying overnight (-90.1% compared to the previous year), which is about 4.0% of the total.

Due to the sharp decline in the number of tourists, tourism consumption decreased by 64.08 billion yen from the previous year, and is estimated to be 50.64 billion yen.
