Shimabara Castle is currently undergoing renovation work ahead of the 400th anniversary of the castle's construction in 2024. The project is an attempt to have Shimabara Castle photographed even during construction. Art is displayed on the construction curtain on the west side of Shimabara Castle. The design was created by two female students of Kyushu Sangyo University's Zokei Junior College. The design is a pixel art on the retro boom. Inspired by the game of the 1980s, Shimabara Castle, carp, guzoni, and kanzarashi express Shimabara's uniqueness.
Shimabara Castle was built in the middle of the Edo period over a period of seven years. After the castle was abandoned in the Meiji era, it was restored in 1964. The five-storey castle tower is 35 meters high.
On Thursday, November 10, the installation of the construction curtain with the design began. Mao Sakamoto, who was in charge of the production, "expressed the impression of visiting a place where you can feel the wonderful Shimabara with pixel art." Mao Yamamoto says, "I was able to learn about the goodness of Shimabara through my involvement in the project, and I hope that it will be an opportunity to learn about Shimabara as well as the castle."
