"Coastline Art Museum" opened in Ogatsu-cho, Ishinomaki City|Art project of mural painting on a huge breakwater
On November 26, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture and SEAWALL CLUB, an art company, opened the "Museum of the Coastline," an open-air art museum that exhibits mural works on a huge seawall in Ogatsucho.

While the museum has the role of protecting people from tsunamis, it also creates a new seaside landscape on the seawall that blocks the view, connecting the sea and people, the past and the future. The mural paintings painted on the huge seawall with a maximum height of 10 meters and a total length of about 3.5 km, built on the coastline of Ogatsu Town after the Great East Japan Earthquake, are integrated with nature and are characterized by their ingenuity that changes their appearance depending on the season and time.
The exhibited works are by the artist Takanosuke Yasui Two works drawn by. The mural painting, which depicts the seascape and the figure of a fisherman as a motif, was created with more than 10 million yen in crowdfunding. We plan to increase the number of murals by 1~2 works per year in the future. Since it is an outdoor museum, it is free to visit.
Local access is about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car from JR Sendai Station. It is about 40 minutes by car from Ishinomaki Station on the JR Senseki Line.
Ogatsu Town, Ishinomaki City is a fishing village along the Sanriku Rias coast. Near the epicenter of the Great East Japan Earthquake, a 20-meter-class tsunami swept in and destroyed 80% of the town. The population was about 4,000 at the time, but now it is about 1,000, and it is a super-aging area.
