It is said that there were 40,000 to 50,000 castles in Japan. Among them, there are many castles with no castle towers or stone walls, only moats and earthworks, and castles with only lore and records that do not even have remains (traces left on the ground).

The new book lists about 10,000 castles throughout Japan by prefecture, and includes data on name, location, age, and castle owner, as well as an overview of each region.

Edited by the Japan Castle Ruins Study Group. We collect literature, records, and information on castle sites all over Japan, and we are particularly focusing on research on small and medium-sized castle sites.
