A special exhibition will be held in Tokyo next January to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Golden Hall of Chusonji Temple.

From January 23 (Wed) ~ April 14 (Sun), 2024, a special exhibition "Chusonji Golden Hall" will be held in the Tokyo National Museum's Main Building Special Room 5 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Chūsonji Temple Golden Hall in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture.

中尊寺金色堂

In the special exhibition, you can experience the beauty and faith of the Golden Hall of Chusonji Temple, a national treasure built in 1124 (the first year of the Tenji era) and the oldest surviving structure in the Tohoku region, and you can enjoy the symbol of Hiraizumi's cultural heritage, which has been registered as a World Heritage Site.

The centerpiece is the display of all 11 Buddha statues, which are national treasures, enshrined in the Sumi altar on the central platform of the Golden Hall. This is the first time that this Buddha statue has been exhibited outside the temple, and a number of artifacts that once stood in the majestic hall will be introduced. In addition, using ultra-high-definition 8KCG images, the golden hall is reproduced in full size on a large display with a width of 7 meters. You can experience the golden space where prayers have been offered for 900 years with images that approach the real thing.

The event was co-organized by the Tokyo National Museum, Chusonji Temple, NHK, NHK Promotion, Japan Arts Council, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and supported by Tendai Buddhism, Iwate Prefecture, and Hiraizumi Town.

Tickets will go on sale from October.
