Miyajima is an international tourist destination visited by about 4 million people a year, and tourism congestion is the norm, but the number of islanders is about 1,400 and the population is decreasing. In response to this situation, in April of this year, the city decided to introduce a Miyajima visit tax in order to make Miyajima a sustainable tourism area. Tax revenue is expected to be about 100 million yen in the two months from October to December this year.

"The tax revenue will be used to improve the system for accepting more than 4 million tourists," Hatsukaichi City explained.
