Travel information magazine "Jalan" to cease publication in March next year - The end of the culture of choosing an inn that turns the pages together

On October 8, 2024, Recruit announced that it will cease publication of the travel information magazines "Jalan" and "Jalan Mook Series" as of March 2025. The reason for the closure is said to be a strategic decision that reflects the needs of users and changes in society.

The closure covers "Kanto/Tohoku Jalan", "Tokai Jalan", "Kansai/Chugoku/Shikoku Jalan", "Kyushu Jalan", and the special special issue and the Mook series, and some of the Mook series ended in June this year. In March of next year, the regional editions of travel information magazines will be discontinued all at once, but the Hokkaido version of travel information magazines and the Mook series will continue to be published.

"Jalan" was first published in 1990 and boasts a history of 35 years. It is a brand that symbolizes Recruit's unique advertising media strategy, which grew rapidly in the Heisei era, and is characterized by a thick magazine page consisting of feature articles in the editorial frame and advertising space introducing accommodations. Before the rise of digital, it was common to see lovers and friends in cafes and fast food restaurants turning pages together as they chose accommodation.

According to a survey by the editorial department, as of 2021, the circulation of the "Jalan Kanto-Tohoku Edition" is about 145,000 copies. The price of the advertisement space is 1.8 million yen for a color spread (half price for one page) and 113,300 yen for a color 1/8 page. On the other hand, the reservation site "Jalan net" is currently a business model in which the registration fee for posting accommodations is free, and the fee is 6%~12% depending on the settlement amount of the accommodation reservation.

When the editorial department of Yotabi News Newsletter asked Recruit PR about the loss of advertising revenue from traditional print media due to the discontinuation of print media and the transition to the NET version, they replied, "We will refrain from answering because the revenue structure will be non-disclosed information."

From March next year, accommodation reservations will be consolidated on the "Jalan net" website and app, which will replace the travel information magazine "Jalan". In addition, general travel information is disseminated through "Jalan News" and "Hokkaido Jalan".
