The "New Three Great Night View Cities in Japan" was launched in 2015 with the aim of spreading nightscape light. An initiative to disseminate Japan's night view culture both domestically and internationally and bring about economic effects. Selection is made once every three years. The target area is selected based on the results of a questionnaire conducted among 6,610 night landscape light professionals nationwide, based on the beauty of the night view and the abundance of tourism resources.

Since the start of the system in 2015, Nagasaki City has been the only city to maintain the "New Three Great Night View Cities in Japan". In addition to night view spots such as Mt. Inasa, Mt. Nabekan, and churches, new facilities such as City Hall and Nagasaki Stadium City are also attracting attention due to the redevelopment of the area around Nagasaki Station triggered by the opening of the West Kyushu Shinkansen.
