Osaka Expo welcomes USJ factions with 10% discount on tickets - an end to the "Which way are you going?" controversy?

On February 7, 2025, the Japan Expo Association announced a new measure to promote ticket sales for the Osaka Expo, offering a 10% discount on Expo tickets to Universal Studios Japan (USJ) ticket purchasers.

Osaka Expo and USJ Speaking of which, in the past, in response to the question "Do you want to go to USJ or the World Expo?" in street interviews on TV programs, the results of many people choosing USJ have been repeatedly broadcast. This new measure took advantage of the topicality of this street survey. The Expo Association and USJ had signed a basic agreement aimed at fostering momentum for the 2020 World Expo.

From 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025, if you purchase a ticket or pass on the official USJ website, you will receive a special website URL and password where you can purchase discounted tickets for the Osaka Expo. The price of the discounted ticket is an "early bird discount" (one admission at any time during the exhibition period), and it is 6,030 yen for adults, 3,330 yen for 3,700 yen for junior high school students, and 1,700 yen for children. In addition, a discount will be applied to the "first semester ticket" (which can be entered once from the opening to July 18).

Since November 2023, the Expo Association has been experiencing a slump in advance ticket sales, and has changed its policy of advance booking and taken measures. In October 2024, we will start selling "paper tickets" at major convenience store chains. In December, with the goal of attracting 4 million visitors from China, the chairman of the Federation of Economic Federations Guan went to Beijing to conduct promotional activities. Then, in February 2025, same-day ticket sales are being considered.

This discount for USJ ticket purchasers is an attempt to increase the number of visitors to the Osaka Expo by utilizing USJ's ability to attract customers. However, since the direction of content is very different between USJ and the Expo, it remains to be seen whether USJ visitors will think that the 10% discount is enough to make USJ visitors think that the Expo will be "incidental."
