Sanriku Coastal Highway to open all lines from Sendai City to Hachinohe City on December 18 - Tourism boost
The Sanriku Coastal Road, a reconstruction road that is the main project of the government in the reconstruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, will open at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2021, between Fudai IC ~ Kuji IC in Iwate Prefecture, and the entire line will be opened. This will connect 359 km from Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture to Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture.

When the Fudai IC ~ Kuji IC (25km) opens, it will take about 16 minutes before the opening of the section, and about 3 hours and 10 minutes compared to before the earthquake.
In addition, Iwate Prefecture is also connected to the Kamaishi Expressway / Kamaishi ~ Hanamaki (80 km) and the Miyako Morioka Transverse Road / Miyako ~ Morioka (66 km), which pass inland from the coastal road, and a new road network will be built in the prefecture.
With the opening of the entire Sanriku Coastal Road, it is expected to have effects not only on logistics, disaster prevention, and daily life, but also on tourism in each prefecture along the line. In addition, the reconstruction road "Sanriku Coastal Road" and the reconstruction support road "Kamaishi Expressway" and "Miyako Morioka Cross Road" can be passed free of charge, except for some sections. The toll sections are "Sendai Kohoku ~ Naruse Okumatsushima (Sanriku Coastal Road)" and "Towa ~ Hanamaki (Kamaishi Expressway)".
